Wheat genome sequencing soon to be released across the globe

Variety development across the world took a major leap forward in early 2016 when, at the annual Plant and Animal Genome Conference, it was announced that a Canadian-led team had sequenced 90 per cent of the highly-complex genome for bread wheat. This breakthrough in genomic sequencing was accomplished, in part, through the Canadian Triticum Applied Genomics (CTAG2) project, which is co-led by plant scientist Curtis Pozniak of the University of Saskatchewan’s Crop Development Centre.

WGRF Invests Record $21.4 M for Wheat and Barley Breeding

The Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) and Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AAFC) announced today that they have renewed their long standing partnership in wheat and barley breeding. WGRF will invest $20 million into wheat breeding and $1.4 million into barley breeding at AAFC Research Centres in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta over the next five years. This represents the largest ever industry investment into research at AAFC.

CGC plans to reclassify several wheat varieties

The plan to modernize the wheat class system was developed in response to concerns from customers of Canada’s wheat that gluten strength in the Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) class is not meeting customer expectations. Gluten strength is an important factor in bread baking because it helps dough rise and maintain its shape as it is baked. As well, there were some concerns about American varieties being grown in Canada and how they would fit into the current wheat class system.

Sask Wheat awards first undergraduate scholarships

The 2015 Bean Feed, which took place on November 20 at TCU Place in Saskatoon, included the awarding of scholarships to current Agriculture and Bioresources students. For the first time, the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat) was included in this portion of the program as the inaugural Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission Essay Award was presented.
