On December 12th, 2022, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced the launch of consultations to develop a Sustainable Agriculture Strategy (SAS) with the goal of “helping to direct collective action to improve environmental performance in the sector over the long-term, support farmers’ livelihoods and strengthen the business vitality of the Canadian agricultural industry.” SaskCrops, a collaboration of SaskBarley, SaskCanola, SaskFlax, SaskOats, Sask Wheat, and the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, submitted a response on behalf of Saskatchewan’s annual crop producers.

Western Canadian farmers are being penalized for early adoption of being better stewards of their land and now will compete against other countries who arrived late to no-till farming and benefited from technology bought and paid for in western Canada. Farms in western Canada will be at a monumental disadvantage to other nations; we were pioneers in soil conservation and are now being penalized for it.

Saskatchewan farm organizations advocate for carbon offset system that recognizes and rewards farmers’ contribution

Saskatchewan farm organizations, the Soil Conservation Council of Canada and the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association (SSCA) are encouraging farmers to participate in a review of the Government of Canada’s proposed Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Offset Credit System regulations. Sask Wheat's comments on Regulatory Proposal PRO2020-01, Streamlined Category B Submissions and Tank Mix Labelling

PMRA’s Regulatory Proposal PRO2020-01 on Tank Mix Labelling indicates that “if a label contains no guidance related to tank mixing, then tank mixes are not permitted.” This is a reversal of PMRA’s long-standing 2009 guidance authorizing the use of tank mixes that do not have specific labels.* This proposed change appears to be administrative in nature, and not based on specific safety concerns as identified by the PMRA. This proposal is also not in alignment with the broader Government of Canada approach to reducing regulatory burden or with US regulations through the EPA, which will put Canadian producers at a disadvantage to their American counterparts.

Sask Wheat advocacy and policy update

Sask Wheat continues to be engaged in the ongoing value creation consultation led by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Sask Wheat Chair, Laura Reiter, is participating on a producer panel that is providing feedback on the next steps of the consultation. For next steps, AAFC and the CFIA are planning an online survey for producers to provide feedback. Sask Wheat encourages all producers to participate in the online survey.
