Term: 3 years, beginning in 2021

Status: Ongoing

Funding Amount: $1,000,000

Lead Researcher(s): Dr. Joyce Boye (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada)

Funding Partners: Western Grains Research Foundation

Project Description

Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AAFC), with its combined six Research and Development Centres and eight Research Farms plays a critical role in furthering agricultural research in support of the wealth and well-being of prairie producers. With the expanding use of technology in agricultural equipment, the concept of precision farming and the ever-increasing need for producers to prove that their agricultural practices are sustainable, AAFC is being challenged as never before to maintain the modern equipment necessary to support the on-going needs of western producers. To continue to provide relevant research, AAFC is seeking to enhance its equipment modernization through WGRF Phase 2 funding. The modernization of obsolete equipment and the purchase newly developed specialty research machinery will enhance nearly every aspect of AAFC’s field programs; breeding and the development of new germplasm through to improved agronomic practices for yield enhancement and agriculture sustainability. Prairie farmers will see the results of this investment in improved cereal, pulse and oilseed varieties, the reduction in inputs through improved agronomics and increased biodiversity as a result of more sustainable farming practices.
