Sask Wheat announces the results of the 2021 director election

 

December 3, 2021 (Saskatoon) – The Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat) 2021 director election has resulted in two current directors being re-elected, a former director being re-elected, and a first-time candidate joining the Board of Directors.

The four elected candidates are:

Robert Stone, who farms near Davidson. Robert has been a full-time farmer and seed retailer since 2003. He sat on his RM council and was an active member of the Davidson Kinsmen Club for many years.

Scott Hepworth, who farms near Assiniboia. Scott previously served as a Sask Wheat director from 2016 to 2020, serving as vice-chair for two years. He has been active in his community, serving on several local boards.

Jake Leguee, who farms near Weyburn. Jake was first elected as a Sask Wheat director in 2017 and has served as vice-chair of the Board and as a Sask Wheat representative on the Boards of Directors of Cereals Canada and the Canadian Wheat Research Coalition (CWRC).

Brett Halstead, who farms near Nokomis. Brett was elected as a Sask Wheat director in 2017 and has served as chair of the Board since January 2020. Brett sits as a Sask Wheat representative on the Board of Directors of Cereals Canada.

The results of the election are as follows: 

  • LEGUEE, Jake – 1,686 votes

  • HALSTEAD, Brett – 1,685 votes

  • HEPWORTH, Scott – 1,679 votes

  • STONE, Robert – 1,636 votes

  • KUHLMANN, Allen – 927 votes

  • BRKICH, Greg – 593 votes

There were 2,466 verified and counted ballots returned for this election. Of those, 1,513 producers voted with a paper ballot while 953 producers voted online.

Each candidate will serve a four-year term. They will be joining three existing directors on the Board: Lesley Kelly of Watrous, Glenn Tait of Meota, and Jocelyn Velestuk of Broadview.

Two long-serving directors will be leaving the Board in January 2022. Bill Gehl, who was elected in 2013 and installed as a director in 2014, farms near Regina. Bill was the chair of the Board from 2014 to 2018 and served as a Sask Wheat representative on the Boards of Directors for the Canadian International Grains Institute (Cigi) and Cereals Canada. Bill serves as the Sask Wheat representative on the Prairie Grain Development Committee (PGDC) for Wheat, Rye and Triticale, the Variety Registration Task Team of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Regulatory Modernization Task Team, and the Board of Directors of the Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF).

Ken Rosaasen, who resides in Saskatoon and farms near Preeceville, was also elected in 2013 and has served on the Board of Directors since 2014. Ken was a professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Saskatchewan. He sits on Sask Wheat’s Research Committee and represents Sask Wheat on the Board of Directors of the CWRC and the Western Standards Committee.

The recently elected directors’ terms will start at the Sask Wheat Annual General Meeting (AGM), which will be held on Monday, January 10, 2022, at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon during the Crop Production Show.
