Wheat midge populations increased significantly compared to the 2023 survey. A hotspot near Regina grew and elevated populations were detected in large areas of Central and Southeast Saskatchewan. Elevated numbers were also seen in the East. Never discount the occurrence of wheat midge, even in regions that are sampled anticipating low levels the following year. Favourable environmental conditions, particularly timely rains prior to the end of May, can still promote larval development and the emergence of adults in late June/early July.
Please note, the coloured points indicate trap catches for individual sites. This information is used to develop the contour map that represents an estimate of regional prevalence.
