June 2013

Formal Launch of the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission

Sask Wheat is a provincially regulated organization – these regulations were passed, and we were officially launched by Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart on June 20, 2013.

August 2013

The Check-Off Becomes Mandatory

The check-off became mandatory on August 1, 2013.

January 2014

Our First Elected Board of Officials

Before January 2014, Sask Wheat was taken care of by an interim Board of Directors appointed by the Saskatchewan government. Our first producer-elected Board of Directors took office on January 13, 2014, and these positions have remained elected ever since.

Sask Wheat Absorbs the Western Canadian Deduction (WCD)

The Western Canadian Deduction (WCD) was established in August 2012 by the Government of Canada, replacing the previous check-off initiative that was administered by the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB). The WCD was established as a transitional levy to ensure continued support for the development of new wheat varieties by public breeding institutions and market support activities at the Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI), which were previously funded by the CWB check-off.

Sask Wheat Absorbs the Saskatchewan Winter Cereals Development Commission (SWCDC)

The Saskatchewan Winter Cereals Development Commission (SWCDC) was a provincially designated organization that represented producers of winter cereals in Saskatchewan. Winter cereals include winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L), fall rye (Secale cereale L), and winter triticale (Triticale x Triticosecale Wittmack).
Sask Wheat took over the mandates of SWCDC on August 1, 2023, to provide greater efficiencies and benefits for producers.
