CGC adopts new standard samples for assessing mildew and frost/heat stress in wheat

As part of its grain grading modernization project, the Canadian Grain Commission initiated a review of the standard samples used for visual assessment of frost/heat stress and mildew in all classes of wheat. New research conducted by the Canadian Grain Commission has proven that these grading factors do not have a compounding negative effect on the end-use functionality of wheat and should be individually assessed to prevent unnecessary downgrading of wheat.

The CGC presented this information to the Western and Eastern Standards Committees who recommended the following changes:

  • The Western Standards Committee recommended that the standard samples for wheat, which have a combination of mildew and frost/heat stress, be repealed and the mildew and frost/heat stress guide samples, which are currently in place, be approved as the new mildew standard and frost/heat stress standard samples as of August 1, 2018. As of this date, mildew and frost/heat stress will be evaluated individually using the applicable standard samples.

  • Eastern Standards Committee recommended renaming the current mildew guides as mildew standards as of July 1, 2018.
